Russia pounds Ukraine’s industrial heartland as Zelensky pitches an “energy ceasefire” at the UN
Russia hit industrial sites in Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih and Pavlohrad overnight Sep 22 with missiles and 212 drones, per Ukraine’s air force (Reuters); pipe-maker Interpipe said a strike on its Dnipro plant killed four employees and halted production. Reuters also reports new high-altitude, jet-powered Shaheds are slipping past mobile air-defence teams. Hours later at UNGA, Zelensky told Trump Kyiv is ready for an energy truce and a trilateral leaders’ meeting; the Kremlin called a Putin meeting before expert-level talks a waste of time (CNBC). On Sep 25 Zelensky said Trump gave final approval for Patriot-interceptor production licenses — no start date given (Militarnyi, citing Forbes Ukraine).

Hormuz: first indirect US–Iran talks in months at UNGA — and a seafarer killed in the strait
US envoys Witkoff and Kushner and Iran’s FM Araqchi exchanged messages through mediators in New York; Iranian state media listed Tehran’s conditions to reopen Hormuz — end the US naval blockade, release frozen assets, halt the war on all “resistance” fronts — and security chief Mohsen Rezaei said Washington has four to five days to respond. On Sep 23 the bulk carrier Cape Dao was struck by an unknown projectile in the strait, killing an Indian crew member (UKMTO via gCaptain); two tankers were hit Sep 21. Trump paired the diplomacy with a warning that the US could escalate if no deal is reached.

Trump–Xi White House summit: pageantry, a trade-truce extension — and Xi’s sharpest Taiwan ask
Xi’s first Washington visit in more than a decade (Sep 24) produced few breakthroughs; Treasury Secretary Bessent said the tariff truce was extended to Jan. 10. Per Xinhua, Xi urged the US to “oppose Taiwan independence” — the White House had not issued its own readout — with a paused ~$14 billion Taiwan arms package in the background (Reuters reported Xi was expected to press for a halt to arms sales under a 1982 agreement). Around the island, Taiwan’s defense ministry kept logging PLA pressure: 10 aircraft sorties, 6 navy ships and 6 official ships in the 24 hours to Sep 23, with 9 sorties crossing the median line.

NATO steps up intel-sharing as Denmark warns Russia will escalate hybrid attacks
Danish defence intelligence assessed that Russia will intensify its hybrid war against the West in the coming months. NATO commander Gen. Alexus Grynkewich told Reuters the alliance is sharing more intelligence after a string of sabotage incidents apparently linked to Russia, including an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle in Germany, and called a limited Russian attack on NATO territory “unlikely but something that we can’t rule out.” Secretary General Rutte urged calm (“Putin is in a bad place”), while US Defense Secretary Hegseth pushed a Europe-led “NATO 3.0” as Washington signals “critical but more limited capabilities” for the alliance.

Houthi missiles target Saudi Red Sea oil hub Yanbu; France pledges air defenses
The Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted six Houthi ballistic missiles aimed at Taif and Yanbu on Sep 24 after civil-defence alerts that included Mecca; the Houthis claimed strikes on Aramco facilities in Yanbu and a “sensitive target” in Riyadh (Al Jazeera, via AP/Reuters). Macron said France will send soldiers, radars and defence systems to protect Yanbu — the kingdom’s main Red Sea crude terminal at the end of the East–West pipeline — as Reuters reports soaring Red Sea insurance costs complicating Saudi exports. Iran’s President Pezeshkian told Fox News the Houthis “don’t take directions from us.” AFP counted at least 150 killed in 24 hours of ground fighting in Yemen.

Desk note: On the watch list for next week — fighting between Ethiopia’s federal army and TPLF-aligned forces erupted midweek in Tigray and spread toward Amhara and Afar, threatening the 2022 peace deal (Guardian · Al Jazeera · BBC). Casualty claims from both sides are not independently verified.
