Trump’s Russian diesel deal lands as Russian strikes kill dozens of Ukrainian civilians

Russia hit Ukrainian cities on back-to-back days: a missile on an apartment building in Pryluky killed at least 22 on Oct 7, and a guided bomb near two packed city buses in Kramatorsk killed at least 30 on Oct 8, officials told CBS News, as the Kremlin said it saw no “clear path” to peace. On Oct 9 Trump wrote on Truth Social that Russia would supply diesel to US and global markets — 300,000 tons immediately, more in November and after — following a call with Putin (Kyiv Independent). Zelensky called the deal a gift to Putin (BBC), and CNBC reported critics say it contradicts US sanctions law on Russia. Overnight into Oct 10, Russian glide bombs struck a residential area of Zaporizhzhia, killing at least 15 per the BBC; the Kyiv Independent put the toll at 20 or more. Ukraine kept striking Russian targets, including Yandex data centres (BBC) and the Omsk refinery (CBS).

Middle East

Iran widens tanker strikes beyond Hormuz; Trump rules out US strikes before the midterms

Two commercial vessels were hit within 24 hours — one off Qatar, the first attack in that area in six months, and one off Fujairah in the Gulf of Oman — as IRGC-affiliated outlets suggested Tehran had extended operations beyond the strait (Euronews, Oct 8). A day later the IRGC warned that ships “violating” its designated routes would be pursued anywhere in the region, with two more strikes reported in the Persian Gulf (Euronews). Trump said Oct 8 the US would not attack Iran before the Nov. 3 midterms and that “productive” talks were under way (Iran International), and the Treasury sanctioned 17 more vessels in its shadow-fleet campaign. On Oct 10 the Kremlin said Putin relayed an Iran war proposal to Trump (CNBC). In Gaza, Al Jazeera reported eight Palestinians, including a child, killed by Israeli forces on the anniversary of last year’s ceasefire; Gaza’s Health Ministry counts at least 1,481 killed since it began.

Houthi missiles hit Riyadh airport as Saudi-backed forces push to retake Bab al-Mandab

Three Saudi citizens were killed in Houthi-claimed strikes on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport on Oct 8, the deadliest attack in the kingdom since it launched its offensive against the Houthis (Guardian); Euronews reported an airline captain among the dead. On Oct 10, AFP witnesses described another strike at the airport’s domestic terminal with dozens reported hurt — not yet confirmed by Saudi authorities (Guardian). On the ground, Saudi-backed Yemeni forces said they had reversed weeks of Houthi gains around Bab al-Mandab (Iran International); the Saudi ambassador declared the strait cleared, while a government military spokesperson said only half the area had been retaken, and the UN envoy told the Security Council that Yemen has lapsed back into full-scale war (Guardian). A Saudi–Pakistan–Turkey defence pact took effect; Turkey said it is weighing defensive support for Riyadh but rules out an offensive role (Defense News).

Indo-Pacific

US envoy says markets overprice Taiwan war risk as Washington flags Chinese activity east of the island

Assistant Secretary of State Michael DeSombre told CNBC on Oct 8 that investors are overestimating the risk of conflict across the Taiwan Strait, calling Xi a “rational actor” who won’t move if it can’t be done without substantial consequences. The same day the State Department called China’s activity east of Taiwan “deeply destabilizing,” after a Reuters report that a Chinese maritime-militia boat, accompanied by a coast guard cutter and a research vessel, was spotted off Hualien in mid-August (Taipei Times / CNA). CNBC noted a $14 billion Taiwan arms package remains on hold. The US Army activated a new 4th Multi-Domain Task Force for the Indo-Pacific, planned to grow to 2,100 soldiers (Defense News).

Drone attack sinks a cargo ship inside NATO member Bulgaria’s Black Sea economic zone

A combined aerial and maritime drone attack on Oct 6 sank the cargo ship Alfa Watan and set the grain carrier ABLE ablaze roughly 70 nautical miles off Bulgaria, inside its exclusive economic zone (Fox News, citing Reuters). Zelensky said it was a Russian attack; Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev called it a flagrant violation of international law while saying it was unclear whether the drones came from Russia or Ukraine. In England, two Latvian men were arrested under the National Security Act after breaching the fence at RAF Molesworth, home to a key US and NATO intelligence hub (Fox News). Lithuania’s prime minister said Vilnius would pay the cost of a permanent US base if Washington agrees to one (Defense News).
