Russia hits Ukraine’s grid days after Trump’s “energy ceasefire” as Starlink limits hamper Kyiv’s drones
Trump announced on Truth Social on Sunday, Oct 11, an “energy ceasefire” that he said “both parties have agreed” to (PBS). Since then, PBS reported, Russia has struck at least 26 energy facilities across Ukraine. Al Jazeera reported Russian air attacks killed at least nine people and left hundreds of thousands without power on Oct 14, and Russia’s Defence Ministry called it a “massive” strike on energy and communications sites. Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 39 missiles and 128 drones overnight (BBC). Zelensky said Ukraine got no warning from Western partners about ballistic missiles aimed at Kyiv. Separately, Ukrainian defence ministry sources told the BBC that Starlink terminals were losing connection above 160 km/h, disrupting interceptor and strike drone missions. PBS reported that former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov later said connectivity was being restored, and Elon Musk said limits are decided by the US military and “ultimately POTUS”. Russia said it downed 902 Ukrainian drones overnight (BBC).

Two ships sink near Hormuz as Iranian officials say new tactics aim at the US midterms
The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride sank on Oct 14 after an attack the day before, and the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Cape Dao sank near the strait weeks after being hit on Sept 23 (Guardian). Iran said a cargo ship sank after hitting a naval mine. UKMTO reported at least five incidents in 48 hours, and Iran International cited a UKMTO tally of 12 vessels attacked between Oct 5 and 11. Two senior Iranian officials told Reuters (via Al-Monitor) that Tehran is using new tactics to keep oil prices high and influence the US midterm elections, with one saying “It will be complete closure soon.” A US military official told Reuters the IRGC is using unarmed spotters in small boats to find targets (Iran International). US Central Command said American and partner forces “clearly control” the strait.

Saudi-led coalition hits Houthi fuel sites; Houthis answer with a strike on an Aramco building
A Houthi strike on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport on Saturday, Oct 10, killed 13 people and injured 308, The National reported. On Oct 13 the Saudi-led coalition struck Houthi-held energy sites, including the al-Sabaha fuel station near Sanaa and fuel piers at Hodeidah, saying they supported Houthi military operations (BBC, The National). The Houthis then said Saudi oil installations were legitimate targets and claimed attacks on Aramco’s headquarters in Dhahran, a Riyadh refinery and the airport (BBC). Saudi authorities said an Aramco administrative building in Dhahran was targeted, causing a limited fire and no injuries, and that four people were hurt by debris from intercepted missiles and drones (CNN). CNN said it was not immediately clear whether the building was directly hit or damaged by falling debris.

China runs a “joint combat readiness patrol” near Taiwan as Taipei watches for larger drills
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense said 13 Chinese aircraft and drones flew out on Oct 14, 11 of them crossing the Taiwan Strait median line, in what it called harassment under the pretext of a “joint combat readiness patrol.” The ministry said it is closely monitoring the chance of large-scale Chinese exercises as the PLA’s November to December peak drill season nears (Taipei Times). A fleet led by the carrier Liaoning began what Beijing called “routine drills” in the western Pacific on Oct 14; the PLA Navy said they are “not directed at any country or target” (Taipei Times). Taiwan News reported that in the 24 hours to 6 a.m. Oct 16, Taiwan tracked eight Chinese military aircraft, nine naval vessels and seven official ships, and that Taiwan has tracked Chinese aircraft 104 times this month.

North Korea fires ballistic missiles, then tests two submarine-launched cruise missiles
On Oct 12, North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles toward the sea off its east coast, one flying more than 900 km, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said (Al Jazeera). Japan’s deputy defence minister said the longer flight followed an “irregular” path and may have been a hypersonic weapon. The JCS called it a show of force after South Korea’s first hypersonic missile test, and Hankyoreh counted it as the North’s 16th ballistic launch of 2026. On Oct 14, North Korea test-fired two types of submarine-launched strategic cruise missiles, including a Pulhwasal-3-31, state media KCNA said (Al Jazeera). A JCS spokesperson said one was fired from a vertical launch system and one from a torpedo tube, and Hankyoreh reported it as the first time two such different missiles were fired from the same submarine.
