Some of the most watched conversations of recent years have been with Catholic priests whose bishops appointed them to cast out demons. On the Shawn Ryan Show, with Tucker Carlson, with Matt Fradd and with Lila Rose, these men describe a battle most people never think about.

Fr. Chad Ripperger, PhD

A Catholic priest, theologian and exorcist, ordained in 1997 for the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. He earned a doctorate in philosophy from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. He founded the Society of the Most Sorrowful Mother, known as the Doloran Fathers, a semi-contemplative society of priests based in Keenesburg, Colorado, in the Archdiocese of Denver. His talks are published by Sensus Traditionis.

Fr. Dan Reehil

Born in 1965 in Mineola, New York, Fr. Reehil spent a decade in global trade and finance in Manhattan before a 1998 Marian pilgrimage brought him back to the Church after twenty years away. Ordained in 2014, he serves as a pastor, vicar forane and exorcist for the Diocese of Nashville, and as National Director of Radio Maria USA, where he hosts Battle Ready with Fr. Dan Reehil.

Msgr. Stephen J. Rossetti, PhD, DMin

A priest of the Diocese of Syracuse for more than 40 years and a licensed psychologist, Msgr. Rossetti founded and leads the St. Michael Center for Spiritual Renewal, which prays with the spiritually afflicted and trains new exorcists. He served for many years as chief exorcist of the Archdiocese of Washington. In June 2026 Cardinal Robert McElroy removed him from that role; he remains a priest in good standing.

Pure spirits, with intellect and will

Fr. Ripperger explains that demons are pure spirits, and that in an exorcism the priest presses truths on them until the will gives way.

Masters of deception

Even exorcists get fooled, Fr. Ripperger says, and the right response is humility.

They work through wounds

They exploit fear

Fr. Reehil describes a woman whose fear was consuming her life. He says giving in to it, rather than trusting God, may have been the door.

They try to divide marriages

“The first thing they ever do in a marriage is they try and put a perspective on one of the spouses or both of the spouses to psychologically divide the people.”Fr. Chad Ripperger, Tucker Carlson at 0:17:30

God remains in control

Fr. Ripperger recalls commanding a demon to explain why it possessed only part of a woman’s body.

That, he says, is when he realized God “has control over everything,” and that it is “ultimately for our spiritual benefit.”

Asked where evil is gaining ground in America, Fr. Ripperger pointed first to public life.

“Obviously, we’re see it just on the grand scale, like in politics and stuff like that, we’re seeing the diabolic…”Fr. Chad Ripperger, Shawn Ryan Show #285 at 0:29:31

On a later episode he recounts a demon, compelled to speak, describing how it works on human attachment: “I convince people that they cannot be separated from the particular good.” Fr. Ripperger says this strikes at the heart of sacrifice.

He also says freeing people has become much harder. Before 1963, he says, it took one to two days on average to free someone from full possession; today it takes an average of four years, in part “because the world is much more evil.” (saved clip)

The demon who was restricted. A demon possessing only a woman’s lower back told Fr. Ripperger that Christ had restricted it there. He took it as a lesson that God governs every manifestation. (Tucker Carlson at 0:06:04)

The woman consumed by fear. Fr. Reehil describes a woman who once had a strong prayer life but gave in to an overwhelming fear. Her pastor joined him in the room for the exorcism. (Shawn Ryan Show #141 at 1:29:56)

Holiness they cannot stand. Msgr. Rossetti says demons cannot bear anything holy: “Say a little prayer, throw a little holy water, they suffer.” (Lila Rose Show E243 at 0:49:17)

The exorcists are clear that most people will never need an exorcist. What they need is ordinary, faithful Catholic life, lived with discipline.

1. Go to confession

Msgr. Rossetti quotes the famous Roman exorcist Fr. Gabriele Amorth: “one good confession is worth 50 exorcisms.” (Lila Rose Show E243 at 1:42:08)

2. Practice daily self-denial

Fr. Ripperger says that when people followed his team’s 30-day prayer prescription, “80% of the time it cleared out everything that was less than possession.” Even devout families stayed under attack, he says, because “there’s nowhere in their spiritual lives where they’re practicing self-denial every single day.” (saved clip; see dolorans.org)

3. Use holy water and sacramentals

Fr. Ripperger names “Catholic sacramentals, holy water, exorcised oil” and blessed candles among an exorcist’s weapons. (Shawn Ryan Show #285 at 2:40:40) Msgr. Rossetti adds that sacramentals are “not magic.” (saved clip)

4. Put order in your life

Fr. Reehil: “Order is from God. The demons don’t like order.” Just putting a routine in place, he says, often makes the demons start to back off. (saved clip)

5. Honor the authority God gave your family

Fr. Ripperger teaches that spouses and parents have rights in relation to one another and to their children, and that the demons have to observe those rights. (saved clip)

6. Stay close to Mary

Msgr. Rossetti: “You hide behind Jesus and his beautiful mother and he’s dust.” (Lila Rose Show E243 at 0:09:36)

7. Close the doors

Msgr. Rossetti warns that leaving the faith, serious sin and the occult, “magic and Witchcraft and Ouija boards,” open the door to trouble. “The good news,” he adds, “is you can” turn back. (A Reason For Hope Podcast at 0:07:20)
